Telugu Speaking Class – Day 87 – 31-1-2021

Explanation on the usage of అన్నమాట (Annamaata)

‘Annamaata’ (అన్నమాట) in Telugu is normally used to emphasize the said words or sentences. Though it does not have any specific or particular meaning, it is used to convey the speaker’s focus on the said words. That means even without using the word ‘Annamaata’, the sentence has meaning.

Sometimes it is used to convey the meaning of the word. In English, there are no equivalent words for it. However, words like apparently or similar words can be used for the word ‘Annamaata’.

Here are the example sentences, given for your reference:

(Ee sanchilo rendu arantipandlu, moodu maamidipandlu unnaayi. Antae vaati nishpatthi 2:3 annamaata) There are two bananas and three mangoes in this bag. That means their ratio is 2:3.

(Janaalu ekkuvagaa thiruguthunna pradhaeshaallonae coronavirus vyaapthi ekkuvagaa undhi. Antae pattana praanthallonae ekkuva annamaata.) Coronavirus transmission is higher where there is more population. That means it is higher in urban areas.

In the above two sentences, it is used to denote the meaning.

Observe the following conversation.

(Ramatho jaagratthagaa undu. Endhukantae thanu pukaarlu vyaapthi chaesthundhi.)Be careful with Rama as she spreads rumours.

It spreads. = Idhi vyaapisthundhi

She spreads = Aame vyaapthi chasthundhi.

She spreads rumours = Aame pukaarlu vyaapthi chasthundhi.

(Avunaa, andhukannamaata nuvvu cheppaedhi.)Is it, for that reason you are saying.

In the above sentence, it is used to emphasize the words ‘spreading of rumours’.

If we divide this word into two separate words, we can get the following words:

అన్న మాట (anna maata)

It means the word which is spoken just now. See the following example.

For example, if somebody repeating your words, you would say:

Don’t repeat after me. (Naenu cheppindhi mallee cheppavaddhu). In other words, we can also say (Naenu anna maata mallee anavaddhu).
